My Neighbors, the Birds

For the last few springs we have had some visitors who stopped by to raise their offspring in our front Japanese maple tree.

There were three little robins last spring.

After the robin sat by the snow encrusted nest in the record foot of snow we had a few weeks ago, I didn't see much movement at the nest.  It seemed to be disintegrating.
The nest sat empty and neglected.  I thought the robins had moved on.

But out on the back deck strange things were happening.  Old grass appeared on the stairway up to the deck.  Several times my husband cleared it off and threw it away. We are planning to have the deck painted this spring.

But, the old dry grass kept appearing.

We noticed the robins hanging around the back yard.

Finally, there was clearly a finished nest and we left it alone.

Mama Robin was observed sitting on the nest, but when I went around the other day it was empty of Mama.

Since the nest is at my height, I held the camera over it to see if there was anything in is.  There were three blue eggs.  I worried that Mama had been scared away or injured.

But later, there she was on the nest.

I will report further as things develop. I suppose the robins aren't really neighbors, more of a sublet.
