On the long walk I made the last Monday of summer vacation I hauled my camera. That is how I am able to show you this- sassafras! Sassafras is a native species of tree with aromatic bark and wood. It is used for tea and sarsaparilla (a drink like root beer). It was formerly used as medicine. It is a tree with very big leaves like a hand print. These sassafras trees were growing along a wild section of the walk, but the land probably belongs to someone. I would love to look for a sapling to dig up and plant in my yard because I haven't seen sassafras at Home Depot or Lowes. But, there is also poison ivy growing along that section. I guess I will skip it. I don't want to be arrested for stealing a tree or get poison ivy. But I wish I had a sassafras tree.
(But, I also wonder if the Rigali Center would care if I took one of the tiny ginko trees growing under the trees there. They are essentially weeds, since they chop them down.)
