The story my sister and I are telling involves a young African American boy coming to Kansas in 1875. Kansas was always a free state, but there was a lot of controversy about slavery there. In Atchinson, KS it seems as though African Americans may not have been welcomed, but in Wichita that does not seem to be the case.
The house below was the Murdock house. The Murdocks were prominent African Americans in Wichita in the time period I am interested in. There house was small, but it had everything they needed.

The Murdock house was a small 3 room clapboard house.
It seemed to be as finely furnished as the larger houses I saw there.
Two double beds in the bedroom would not have provided much privacy, but would have been comfortable in winter.
I liked the corner cupboard and the painted borders.
I would not have liked to have used a cook stove.
I liked the quilts. Of course. And the braided rug. I am still of a mind that our young man may have to meet the Murdocks in Wichita at some point in the story.
(And there is still so much to see! Tune in tomorrow.)
