Summer Reading Club

In second grade I merited the distinction of reading more books than anyone else in my class.  I recall that the books were of the ilk of Flicka Dicka and Ricka.  I read after supper to my whole family.  The books were short and I would read the entire thing at one dinner theatre setting.  But, despite the honor, I didn't learn to love to read from that win at reading.  I remember Flicka Dicka and Ricka as being boring.  If they listened, I would read.

Then in the summer between 4th and 5th grade I discovered Big Red by Jim Kjelgaard.  It was the first book that seemed real to me.  The first book I loved.  And after that I read.  I mainly read dog stories at first, but eventually I became an eager and eclectic reader.  I read Dickens, Twain, Austin, Christie, and everything in between.  I really came to love storytellers like Maeve Binchey and murder mystery authors like P. D. James and Elizabeth George. And I like non-fiction.

As a librarian, reading is something that is part of my job.  I would think I should love that, but sometimes I don't.  I have to read a lot of books, and some of them I don't enjoy that much.  Even the good ones are written for 12 to14 year olds and I haven't been that age in a while.  I have a couple of competitive things going on each year at my library to get the kids to read. But, I reflect that as a kid, I never would have done them.

As a kid over the age of second grade I never entered the summer reading programs either.  I don't think they had adult programs until recent years.  I have never really had much interest in reading for prizes.  But, this year, as I sold the reading club to the kids, I thought, maybe I will register this year.  So, I did.

I am reading for prizes.  Bring it on. LOL

(And I have already logged one book, only 5 more and I get prizes!)
