Happy V Day

My husband and I met on Valentine's Day in 1978.  We were the only two Catholics at a Methodist prayer meeting.  The pastor and his wife were celebrating their anniversary.  I remember that my husband to be helped me put on my coat.  I just got rid of that coat a couple of years ago.  Call me sentimental.

So much of the commercial part of Valentine's Day is about our over sexualized culture and objectifying women that it is hard to know how to approach this "holiday."  Still, I believe for old married couples like myself it is good to have a "date" once in a while and to have a day that is a little out of the ordinary television or computer use.  Stepping into something special is a way to remember that love is part of the equation.  That life isn't just drudgery until one finally dies.

I think the emphasis on the best, most romantic date ever is over done and overly commercial.  But some small touches that celebrate who you are to each other is a great way to observe St. Valentine's Day.
