I have been looking for vintage recipes that I didn't want to lose.  When I came upon this one, it brought tears to my eyes.  My brother Ned's first wife died of breast cancer before she was 40 years old.  She never had children.  She is buried up in Washington state far away from her family and ours now that my brother has remarried and is back in the midwest.  Her name was Candy. This recipe called Cabbage Patch Stew came from her.  It is the heart of the winter and time to boil up a pot of this stuff.

Cabbage Patch Stew
1 lb. ground beef
2 med. finely chopped onions
1/2 c. chopped celery
1 1/2 c. coarsely chopped cabbage
1 can stewed tomatoes (16 oz)
1 can kidney beans (16 oz)
1 c. water
1 tsp. salt
1 to 2 tsp. chili powder
1/4 tsp. pepper
Cook hamburger and drain.  Add onions, celery, and cabbage.  Cook and stir in hamburger until vegetables are very lightly browned.  Stir in tomatoes, kidney beans with liquid, water, salt and pepper, and chili powder.  Heat until boiling.  Serve when it looks like it is done with bread or rolls or cornbread.
