Living Metaphor

A woman I know told this story.

She was bothered by anxiety over various things.  Sometimes the anxiety overwhelms her and makes her live close to tears and thinking of nothing else.  She was unable to get these anxieties out of her mind.

A friend to her to do this--write her anxiety out on a piece of paper.  Wad the paper up and carry it in her right hand.  Then just continue about her day--combing her hair, tying her shoes, cooking dinner while never putting down the wadded up paper with the anxiety until she is ready to give it to Jesus. When she is ready to give the worry to Jesus, she should pray and put the paper in a can that she labels "Jesus."

When the woman recounted this story she confided that she didn't think this would work.  It sounded silly to her, but she did it.  After experiencing frustration in living her life holding onto the wadded up paper, she decided to give the "anxiety" (wadded paper) to Jesus.  She prayed and put it in the can.

Then a little while later as she was doing the things that carrying the paper had not allowed her to do, she thought--What was that thing I was worrying about?  And she couldn't remember.  Jesus had taken it. (She almost went and took the paper out of the can to read what it was, she was so surprised that she couldn't remember, but then she decided that she had given it to Jesus and there it must stay.)
